چکیده

Cooling towers provide an ideal environment for microbial growth and have been attributed as a source for accumulation and dissemination of pathogenic organisms, especially Legionella pneumophila [1,2]. Since Legionella infections have frequently been traced to contaminated aerosols generated at distances over 6 km, cooling systems have a potential risk for public health. Inhalation of Legionella-contaminated aerosols may cause Legionnaires' Disease or Pontiac fever in humans [3]. The most common approach to eliminate or reduce the biofouling problem in contaminated systems is chemical treatment primarily by using biocides [4]. Owing to the fact that biofilm bacteria are more resistant than their planktonic counterparts to the biocides, biocide concentrations can lead to microbial resistance build-up first to the biocide and then consequently to the antibiotics.

A Short Methodology Review: for the evaluation of biocides against biofilms in recirculating water systems

Biofilm formation in recirculating water systems such as cooling towers lead to many undesired conditions in terms of public health concern, operational damage and economic loss. Accumulation of pathogenic bacteria (i.e. Legionella pneumophila), increased resistance to antimicrobial compounds, a significant energy loss by increasing heat transfer resistance, equipment damage through microbiolog...

Formulation of Biocides Increases Antimicrobial Potency and Mitigates the Enrichment of Nonsusceptible Bacteria in Multispecies Biofilms.

The current investigation aimed to generate data to inform the development of risk assessments of biocide usage. Stabilized domestic drain biofilm microcosms were exposed daily over 6 months to increasing concentrations (0.01% to 1%) of the biocide benzalkonium chloride (BAC) in a simple aqueous solution (BAC-s) or in a complex formulation (BAC-f) representative of a domestic cleaning agent. Bi...

Susceptibility of Legionella Strains to the Chlorinated Biocide, Monochloramine

Members of the Legionella genus find suitable conditions for their growth and survival in nuclear power plant cooling circuits. To limit the proliferation of Legionella pathogenic bacteria in nuclear power plant cooling circuits, and ensure that levels remain below regulatory thresholds, monochloramine treatment can be used. Although the treatment is highly effective, i.e. it reduces Legionella...

Assessment of antibiotic susceptibility of Legionella pneumophila isolated from water systems in Poland.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE Several studies have reported therapy failures in patients with legionnaires'disease; however, antimicrobial resistance of clinical and environmental isolates of Legionella spp. has not yet been documented. Routine susceptibility testing of Legionella spp. is not recommended because of difficulties in determining standard minimal inhibitory concentration values. The p...

Evaluation of Wi-Fi Radiation Effects on Antibiotic Susceptibility, Metabolic Activity and Biofilm Formation by Escherichia Coli 0157H7, Staphylococcus Aureus and Staphylococcus Epidermis

Background: The radiation emitted from electromagnetic fields (EMF) can cause biological effects on prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, including non-thermal effects. Objective: The present study evaluated the non-thermal effects of wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) operating at 2.4 GHz part of non-ionizing EMF on different pathogenic bacterial strains (Escherichia coli 0157H7, Staphylococcus aureu...
